The problem of waste

Tourism sector in the European Union generates about 35 million tons of waste per year, which represent approximately 7% of the total quantity of waste from the services sector.
In Greece, the average production of municipal solid waste from tourist accommodations amounts to 1.7-2.5 kg per guest night (according to estimates of SETE).

 

A few words about waste

Waste is considered any substance or object which its owner discards or intends or is obliged to discard. There are three categories of waste, depending on their physical state, which are solid, liquid and gas.

In this case we are mainly concerned about solid waste and particularly food waste with your company's solid waste.

Please use the following definitions to better understand the differences between the various types of food waste.

According to Directive 2008/98/EC, as amended by 2018/851, food waste means all food, as defined in article 2 of Regulation (EC) no. 178/2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council, which have become waste.

Simply put, any food that has become waste. "Food" (or "nourishing items")* means substances or products, whether fully, partially or not processed, which are intended for, or reasonably expected to be used for, human consumption.

"Food" includes drinks, chewing gum and any substance, including water, which is intentionally incorporated into food during its production, preparation, or processing. Water is also included after the point of compliance, as defined in Article 6 of Directive 98/83/EC and subject to the requirements of Directives 80/778/EEC and 98/83/EC.

"Food" does not include the following:

a) Animal feed

(b) Live animals, unless prepared for placing on the market for human consumption

(c) Pre-harvest plants

d) Medicinal products within the meaning of the directives 65/65/EEC (1) and 92/73/EEC (2) of the Council

e) Cosmetics within the meaning of Council Directive 76/768/EEC (3)

f) Tobacco and tobacco products within the meaning of the directive 89/622/EEC of the Council (4)

g) Narcotic or psychotropic substances within the meaning of the United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961, and the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances of 1971

h) Residues and infectious impurities.
